Panthenol is a provitamin that when applied topically, is converted into vitamin B5 (also known as pantothenic acid). 

Panthenol binds and holds onto water, keeping skin moisturized and maintaining its elasticity. It acts as both a humectant (water-binding) and emollient (seal cracks to keep moisture locked in). Panthenol works very well with humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Its moisturizing effects make it a popular ingredient in hair products as well.
